At the age of 92, on 8 July 2026, B\u00e9la K\u00e1d\u00e1r<\/strong>, a Sz\u00e9chenyi Prize-winning economist, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and Honorary Lifetime President of the Hungarian Economic Association (HEA)<\/strong>, passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u00e9la K\u00e1d\u00e1r was born in P\u00e9cs in 1934. He began his career at the National Bank of Hungary. From 1965, he worked at the Afro-Asian Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1972, he was appointed Head of the Department of Advanced Capitalist Economies at the Institute for World Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From 1988, he served as Director of the Institute for Economic Planning of the National Planning Office. He earned his Candidate of Economic Sciences degree in 1970 and his Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences degree in 1980. He became a member of the Academy’s Committee on Economics and later served on the Committee on International Economics and Development Studies, the Doctoral Council, and the Presidential Committee „Our Mother Tongue in Europe.” He was elected a Corresponding Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2001 and a Full Member in 2007. His research focused on economic and industrial development, the international division of labour, and international economic relations. He also conducted extensive research on comparative economic policy, the challenges of historically delayed modernization, and the processes of economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Hungary’s first free parliamentary elections in 1990, he joined the government led by J\u00f3zsef Antall as the inaugural Minister of the newly established Ministry of International Economic Relations. He continued in this position in the government of P\u00e9ter Boross. In the 1994 parliamentary elections, he won a seat in Parliament from the Baranya County regional list of the Hungarian Democratic Forum. Between 1998 and 1999, he served as Chairman of the Hungarian Export-Import Bank (Eximbank). From 1999 to 2003, he was Head of Hungary’s Permanent Delegation to the OECD. Also in 1999, he was elected a member of the Central Bank Council of the National Bank of Hungary and subsequently became a member of the Monetary Council following amendments to the Act on the National Bank of Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its landmark General Assembly of Delegates on 11 March 1990, held during Hungary’s democratic transition, the Hungarian Economic Association (HEA) elected B\u00e9la K\u00e1d\u00e1r as one of its Vice Presidents, a position he held until 1999 following several re-elections. While still serving in Paris, he was elected President of the HEA on 27 March 2002. He served in this capacity for six years\u2014the maximum term permitted under the Association’s statutes at the time. Since 2008, he had been Honorary President for Life of the Hungarian Economic Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As was noted in the citation presented when he received the HEA’s highest distinction, the Economist Lifetime Achievement Award, B\u00e9la K\u00e1d\u00e1r consistently embodied the highest standards of the economics profession, both before and after Hungary’s democratic transition. His outstanding economic analyses, as well as his writings and lectures exploring the forces shaping the global economy and national economies alike, earned him widespread respect and admiration. His lectures ranged from excellent to truly captivating. They enriched audiences not only with data and economic insight but also with a deeper appreciation of history, literature, and the wisdom of classical Latin. His exceptional rhetorical skills shone equally in Spanish, English, German, and Hungarian, consistently impressing international counterparts and audiences alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
