HEA-member P\u00e9ter Asztalos, a member of the Board of the HEA\u2019s Demography Section, has been appointed president of the Kopp M\u00e1ria Institute for Demography and Families (KINCS) as of September 28. Going forward, the institution, which operates as a background institution of the ministry, will continue to function as a purely scientific, data-driven research centre, with a focus not only on family policy but also on social policy, extreme poverty and ageing policy. The new president was selected through an open application process from among six eligible applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the first tasks of the new leadership will be to review the institute\u2019s operations and professional activities and to create the conditions necessary for its long-term operation. An important objective will be to establish a predictable and calm working environment where staff can focus on research and the tasks entrusted to them, according to the information published on Korm\u00e1ny.hu in connection with the appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
KINCS will continue to operate as a research-oriented background institution of the ministry, within the State Secretariat for Social Affairs, Family Affairs and Older People. In addition to family policy research, greater emphasis will in future be placed on social policy and social research, ageing policy, promoting equal opportunities in society, examining extreme poverty and the situation of Roma communities, as well as social innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cWe want to create a research institute that can respond flexibly to new challenges and effectively support the ministry\u2019s professional work. An important task for us will be not only to rely on our own research, but also to collect and make use of research findings and experience generated elsewhere in the field for policy-making. To this end, we will seek closer cooperation with researchers, professional institutions, universities and civil society organisations. Our aim is to ensure that as much of the knowledge available in Hungary as possible is incorporated into policy decisions,\u201d said P\u00e9ter Asztalos, the institute\u2019s new president.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

We do not want to validate predetermined outcomes, but rather to support policy decisions with reliable, data-driven research,\u201d added Dr Kinga D\u00f3ra T\u00f3th, State Secretary for Social Affairs, Family Affairs and Older People.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Social innovation will be an important consideration across all research areas. In the future, in addition to research and analysis, the institute will also examine good practices from Hungary and abroad, as well as new and effective solutions. The results of impact assessments may contribute to further developing existing programmes and ensuring that new decisions are based on a more solid evidence base. In response to its expanding responsibilities, smaller research teams specialising in different fields will be established, while the new president will review the current staff and assess what additional expertise will be needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of the renewal, the institute\u2019s communication and representational activities will also be transformed. The visibility of the institute and the presentation of its work will remain important, but research findings, analyses and well-founded professional information will become the focus of its communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
