During the event the highest honour of the HEA, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Economics was received by Mikl\u00f3s Pulai, former Secretary General of the Hungarian Banking Association. The preparations for this year\u2019s Itinerant Conference of Economists were also discussed; the largest annual conference of the economics profession will take place on 5-7 September 2019 in Ny\u00edregyh\u00e1za.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The delegates of the HEA\u2019s sections and county organizations also approved the 2018 annual report and public benefit report. Assessing the previous year, \u00c9va Heged\u00fcs<\/strong>, Secretary General of the HEA, Chairperson and CEO of GR\u00c1NIT Bank Zrt. said that 2018 was a robust year in the history of the Association. In addition to the 80-100 county and section events held traditionally every year<\/a>, numerous conferences took place that the 125 year old HEA could be proud of. The Itinerant Conference of Economists in Debrecen attracted almost 900 participants and 160 speakers. The prestigious international event organized by the HEA addressed issues such as the renewal of economics, while enhancing cooperation with the economic associations of the V4 and the Hungarian communities outside the borders.<\/p>\n

\"\"Sustainability and the economic, national economic and social challenges resulting from the climate change will be in the focus of the 57th Itinerant Conference of Economists, expected to be attended by 800-900 professionals from the Carpathian Basin and the V4 countries this year as well, said Gyula Pleschinger<\/strong> outlining this year\u2019s plans of the Hungarian Economic Association. The President of the HEA and member of the Monetary Council announced the plenary speakers of the conference taking place at the University of Ny\u00edregyh\u00e1za between 5-7 September 2019, including J\u00e1nos \u00c1der<\/strong>, President of the Republic of Hungary, Gy\u00f6rgy Matolcsy<\/strong>, Governor of the MNB, Mih\u00e1ly Varga<\/strong>, Minister of Finance, Andrea B\u00e1rtfai-Mager<\/strong>, Minister without Portfolio for National Asset Management, and L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Domokos<\/strong>, President of the State Audit Office, in addition to numerous other renowned speakers of national and international business.<\/p>\n

Tam\u00e1s Halm<\/strong>, Editor-in-Chief of the Hungarian Economic Review, Board Member and former Secretary General of the HEA recalled the history of the 125 year old Hungarian Economic Association established on 27 May 1894, currently including over 3,000 members, 23 sections and 15 county organizations which was founded, among others, by the prime ministers of the \u2018happy times of peace\u2019 still remembered today. K\u00e1lm\u00e1n Sz\u00e9ll, Istv\u00e1n Tisza and S\u00e1ndor Wekerle found it equally important to participate in the work of the economic association. The founders of the HEA also included Ign\u00e1c Acs\u00e1dy, Miksa Falk, Ern\u0151 Holl\u00e1n and S\u00e1ndor Lipthay who lent their name to streets in Budapest, in addition to other prominent figures of the era, such as scientist and bank director Gyula Kautz, statistician J\u00f3zsef K\u0151r\u00f6si, and the first governor of the National Bank of Hungary, S\u00e1ndor Popovics.<\/p>\n

As Tam\u00e1s Halm recalled, the Hungarian Economic Association has always been characterized by a practical approach to economics, rather than focusing on theoretical issues and research outcomes. In the early 1900s the HEA organized a series of presentations on emigration, and then later on war-related economic issues, inflation, land policy, financial situation in the capital city, etc. According to contemporary press reports these events were attended by active and former ministers (and prime ministers), secretaries of state, professors and business leaders, among others. The events and discussions of the association provided important workshops on the 1920 land reform initiated by agriculture minister Istv\u00e1n Nagyat\u00e1di Szab\u00f3, or the economic reforms in the middle and late \u201860s.<\/p>\n

Grand Award in Economics for Zolt\u00e1n M\u00e1di<\/p><\/div>\n

Finally, the annual General Assembly of the HEA ended with the presentation of awards by President Gyula Pleschinger and Secretary General \u00c9va Heged\u00fcs on the occasion of the 125th anniversary celebration. According to the decision of the Board, the highest honour of the HEA, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Economics<\/strong> was received by Mikl\u00f3s Pulai<\/strong>, former secretary general of the Hungarian Banking Association. The Kautz Gyula Prize <\/strong>named after a former president of the HEA was received by Ferenc Munk\u00e1csy<\/strong>, editor-in-chief of the Labour Review, former president of the Labour Section of HEA, and Zolt\u00e1n Szegedi<\/strong>, professor of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University, founder and co-president of the Logistics Section of HEA. The L\u00e1ng Lajos Prize<\/strong> named after the first president of the HEA was awarded to J\u00e1nos K\u00e1m\u00e1n<\/strong>, managing director of the Zalaegerszeg-based Pylon-94 Kft., Board member of the Zala County Organization of the HEA.<\/p>\n

Celebrating the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the HEA, the Board unanimously decided to present the Grand Award in Economics<\/strong> to Tam\u00e1s Bihall<\/strong>, Chairman of the Borsod-Aba\u00faj-Zempl\u00e9n County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, President of the Borsod-Aba\u00faj-Zempl\u00e9n County Organization of the HEA; \u00c1gnes Csan\u00e1di<\/strong>, Head of Department, Associate Professor of the BGE Zalaegerszeg Faculty of Business Administration, Vice President of the Zala County Organization of the HEA; P\u00e9ter Halmai<\/strong>, Academic, Professor of the National University of Public Service, co-founder and first president of the Veszpr\u00e9m County Organization of the HEA; and Zolt\u00e1n M\u00e1di<\/strong>, Head of Department of the Integration Organisation of Cooperative Credit Institutions, President of the Szabolcs-Szatm\u00e1r-Bereg County Organization and Board Member of the HEA.<\/p>\n
