The youngest unit of the Hungarian Economic Association made a successful debut at the 56th Itinerant Conference of Economists with an independent section. The half-day programme of the European Union Section which was established in the spring of 2018, led by President Szabolcs Fazakas, featured presentations by Szabolcs Takács, Secretary of State of the Prime Minister’s Office for EU policy development and coordination on the current issues of the European Union, György Szapáry, former ambassador, Chief Advisor to the Governor of the MNB on the clash of centripetal and centrifugal forces at EU level, Gábor Iván, head of General Policy Directorate, Council of the European Union on the current issues of the EU’s new Multiannual Financial Framework, and László Baranyay, member of Board, European Investment Bank and former vice president on the EIB’s contribution to European and Hungarian economic development.

As an important development for the Section, Imre Juhász, former foreign economic diplomat at the Hungarian Embassy in Berlin, who has been member of the Hungarian Economic Association for two decades, consented to undertake secretarial duties for the EU Section of HEA. The experiences gained by Imre Juhász in the field of diplomacy, commercial policy and foreign economy are expected to largely contribute to the further expansion of the Section’s professional programmes.

Preparations by the EU Section of the HEA are already in progress for its next professional event to take place in early October, in the framework of which Péter Balás, former Deputy Director-General of DG Trade will provide an overview of the current issues of customs and trade policy in the EU. Information on the exact place, date and time of the event will be provided shortly.
