Gábor Iván, Director of the the General Policy Directorate of the Council of the European Union, was elected President of the European Union Section of the Hungarian Economic Association on Monday. Zsolt Becsey, Deputy Head of the Institute of Social Sciences and International Studies of the Faculty of Law of the Károli Gáspár Reformed University, former member of the European Parliament, was elected Vice-President of the EU Section of HEA.
The European Union Section of the Hungarian Economic Association held its partial election due to the tragic death of its president, Szabolcs Fazakas. At the section meeting held on Webex, Gyula Pleschinger, President of the Hungarian Economic Association, praised the work of the European Union Section since its establishment in February 2018. He spoke about the development of HEA’s international relations and drew the new presidency’s attention to the possible synergies in cooperating with other sections e.g. International Economy, Development Policy and CEE.
In his closing remarks, the new president of the section, Gábor Iván, said that the presidency would be preparing for a number of professional events in the coming months, with many issues, for instance the EU’s multiannual budgetary framework; the future of the euro and the issues of its introduction in Hungary. The German and Portuguese ambassadors to Budapest will be asked to evaluate the results of the two countries’ EU presidencies in the coming months.
