Is the value added a compass for industrial policy?

Why value added is not an appropriate compass for industrial policy? This is the title under which a study by Péter Mihályi—corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) and emeritus professor at Corvinus University of Budapest—will be published in the February issue of Közgazdasági Szemle (Economic Review). In connection with this discussion-initiating article, Közgazdasági Szemle and the Hungarian Economic Association (Magyar Közgazdasági Társaság, MKT) are organizing a roundtable discussion on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, starting at 2:00 p.m., in the MKT community space, on the 4th floor of Building B of the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University (1053 Budapest, Kecskeméti u. 10–12.), and on the MKT YouTube channel.

At the beginning of the event, Academician Péter Mihályi will present the main findings of the study. Invited discussants include Péter Ákos Bod, emeritus professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, former Minister of Industry and Trade, and Vice President of the MKT, and Magdolna Sass, Director of the Institute of World Economics at the ELTE KRTK. The discussion will be moderated by Tamás Halm, Editor-in-Chief of Közgazdasági Szemle.

The discussion can be followed live on the MKT YouTube channel at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-amuRdRBkL0.

Due to the seating capacity of the venue, in-person participation in the event is subject to prior registration. We kindly ask those interested to indicate their intention to participate as soon as possible by emailing mkt@mkt.hu.
