The Hungarian Euro in the Real Economy – under this title, GKI Economic Research Co., the Institute for Economic and Competitiveness Research at the Ludovika University of Public Service (LUPS), and the Public Finance and Financial Sections of the Hungarian Economic Association (HEA) are organising their traditional autumn conference on Friday, 13 November 2026, starting at 9:50 a.m. The event will take place in the Zrínyi Hall at the Ludovika University of Public Service (ground floor, 2 Ludovika tér, Budapest 1083).
As the organisers point out, the government’s declared goal is to introduce the euro around 2030, bringing the issues of the optimal exchange rate, exchange rate stability and monetary independence into a new perspective. This has already resulted in a strong forint, foreshadowing the prospect of irreversible appreciation with the future introduction of the Hungarian euro. A strong forint today and an irrevocably fixed euro exchange rate in the future may be regarded as either favourable or unfavourable developments, depending on one’s perspective, although their effects are far from uniform across economic actors. For consumers, the benefits may include cheaper imports, more affordable foreign travel and lower inflation, while export-oriented companies may see their profitability decline. From the perspective of government financing, a more stable exchange rate and lower inflation could create a more favourable interest rate environment. Appreciation may pose a significant competitiveness challenge for export-oriented industries and, in particular, for services that rely on foreign demand. The conference will examine expectations surrounding the future introduction of the Hungarian euro, primarily from the perspective of manufacturing companies.
The opening keynote address will be delivered by Gergely Tardos, CEO of the Government Debt Management Agency. Speakers will include, among others, Miklós Horváth, President of Ventura Zrt. and Vice-President of the Confederation of Hungarian Employers and Industrialists (MGYOSZ); Miklós Losoncz, Professor at the Budapest University of Economics and Business; and László Molnár, Lead Researcher at GKI Economic Research Co. The conference is organised by Gábor Kutasi, Head of Institute and Head of Department at LUPS, Associate Professor with habilitation, and a member of the board of the HEA’s Public Finance Section; and Péter Pál Kolozsi, Professional Director at GKI Economic Research Co. and President of the HEA’s Financial Section.
