The Financial and Public Finance Sections of the Hungarian Economic Association, jointly with the University of Public Service and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, are organizing the 8th Budapest Public Finance Seminar conference on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, starting at 10:00 a.m. in the Zrínyi Hall of the main building of the National University of Public Service (1083 Budapest, Ludovika Square 2, mezzanine level). The topic of this year’s English-language conference is sovereign money.
Over the past decade, both technological developments and advances in monetary theory have reshaped the economic policy opportunities offered by central bank money, while we have repeatedly experienced financial crises based on credit money. Can central bank digital currency create an opportunity to operate a monetary system with lower risk and lower interest costs? Invited speakers from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, and Hungary will help clarify this issue from fintech, MMT, banking, and economic policy perspectives.
