The future, challenges, and opportunities of European integration will be examined from a Hungarian and Central and Eastern European perspective in an upcoming volume of studies edited by Péter Halmai, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, professor at BME and NKE, and president of the Economic Policy and Economic Theory Section of the HEA, together with István P. Székely, member of the HEA, retired director of the European Commission and honorary university professor. On the occasion of the publication of the volume, the Section IX of Economics and Law of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, jointly with the HEA’s Economic Policy and Economic Theory Section and European Union Section, is organizing a professional conference on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. in Budapest at Europe Point (1024 Budapest, Lövőház u. 35.). As part of the conference, participants will be able to attend two exciting panel discussions. The title of the first discussion is The Future of European Integration: Challenges and Opportunities. The moderator will be Dóra Győrffy, professor at Corvinus University of Budapest and board member of the HEA’s Economic Policy and Economic Theory Section. The panelists will include Péter Halmai; Miklós Hajdu, researcher at Corruption Research Center Budapest; Kálmán Mizsei, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations; István P. Székely, retired director of the European Commission and honorary university professor; and János István Tóth, director of Corruption Research Center Budapest and lecturer at SGH Warsaw School of Economics.
The second panel discussion will focus on The Future of European Integration from a Central European Perspective. It will be moderated by Gábor Zupkó, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Hungary. The participants will include László Andor, former EU Commissioner, Secretary General of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, and vice president of the HEA; István Benczes, professor at Corvinus University of Budapest; Zoltán Martinusz, director at the Council of the European Union; and Enikő Győri, Member of the European Parliament.
