Why Don’t We Prevent What Can Be Prevented?

In Hungary, as many as 16,000 people under the age of 75 died in 2023 alone from diseases and health conditions that could have been treated or prevented. At a time when the population is declining dramatically – last year, nearly 60% more people died in Hungary than were born – protecting the lives of the working-age population is also a key national economic interest. The roundtable discussion organised by the Demographics Section of the Hungarian Economic Association (HEA) will take place on Tuesday, 10 November 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the HEA Community Space (Building B of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, Eötvös Loránd University, 1053 Budapest, 10–12 Kecskeméti Street, 4th floor, Room 403) and will be streamed on the HEA YouTube channel. The discussion will explore why something that could be avoided seems inevitable in Hungarian healthcare, and how this situation could be changed.

The participants in the roundtable discussion will be Magdolna Dank, Director-General of the National Institute of Oncology, and László Gulácsi, Professor at Óbuda University, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a member of the board of the HEA Section of Health and Health Economics. The discussion will be moderated by Anita Élő, a journalist at Válasz Online and a member of the board of the HEA Demographics Section.

The discussion will be streamed live on the HEA YouTube channel via this link.

Attendance in person is free of charge, but advance registration is required due to the venue’s limited capacity. We kindly ask those interested in attending to register as soon as possible by emailing mkt@mkt.hu.
