The Demographic Section of the Hungarian Economic Association will organise a professional roundtable discussion on the effectiveness of family support schemes on Tuesday, 12 March 2024, from 14:00 on Webex and on the HEA’s YouTube channel.
Roundtable participants – Gyula Fekete, statistician, member of the Board of the Demographic Section; Péter Hugó Asztalos, analyst of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank; Anita Élő, journalist of Válasz Online; and András Székely, Scietific Researcher at the Mária Kopp Institute – will discuss the fact that although the government has tried to improve the situation of families with more than 40 measures in eight areas over the past decade, and has tried to encourage child-rearing and increase the birth rate with subsidies, the number of marriages and births, as well as the fertility rate, have developed unfavourably in the past period. By analysing these trends, experts are looking at how to rethink demography policy instruments and reduce the decline in births without increasing the budgetary burden. The discussion will be moderated by János I. Tóth, philosopher, demographer, habilitated associate professor at the University of Szeged, member of the board of the section.
