Since the publication of the 2023 birth data and the related analyses by the HCSO, there has been a growing debate on the effectiveness of the demographic targets of recent years. These studies confirm the need for a new demographic strategy in Hungary. The Demographic Section of the Hungarian Economic Association (HEA) will organise a round table discussion on this topic on Tuesday 9 January 2024, 10.00 am on Webex and on the HEA YouTube channel.

The speakers – demographer Pál Péter Tóth, philosopher János Tóth I., habilitated associate professor at the University of Szeged and publicist János Reichert – will seek answers to questions such as whether demographic targets are necessary and realistic; whether there is a chance of achieving the three-child family model; and whether it is possible to achieve a demographic turnaround with existing instruments. The discussion will be moderated by József Benda, socialisation researcher and President of the Demography Section of the HEA.
